Movies
+ Friends, I don’t know if you heard, but Suicide Squad is potentially the worst movie ever made. The reviews are so universally bad that the You-Know-Whos are trying to shut down Rotten Tomatoes so people won’t have a place to talk about what a garbage heap it is. However, your beloved Cara Delevingne is still in it which means she has been doing some good press, including her cover interview in this month’s Elle. (To read the interview you’ll have to either subscribe to Elle’s newsletter or confess “I am not interested in celebrity friendships.”)
On why she opened up about her own struggles on social media and in interviews after young fans started sharing theirs with her:
“I couldn’t just sit there and listen to these girls, and boys, too, but usually girls, say this stuff, about bullying, about their sexuality, depression, and guilt and suicidal thoughts and just all of it, without being like, ‘I have been through that, and it’s going to be okay.’ If I can help a teenager go through a better time than they should be, then I am going to fucking do that. I mean, fucking being a teenager suuuccccks. And I somehow came through the other end.”
Also, guess what? She is “completely in love.” (I mean, we knew that a million years before the liberal media elite, thanks to the unwavering investigative journalism of Ms. Stef Schwartz.)
“I’m completely in love… Before, I didn’t know what love was – real love,” she told us of her relationship with American singer-songwriter Annie Clark (known by her stage name St Vincent). “I didn’t understand the depth of it. I always used to think it was you against the world. Now I know the meaning of life is love. Whether that’s for yourself or for the world or your partner.”
TV
+ There is going to be a new season of Arrested Development, Portia de Rossi will be involved with it, and it is going to film in 2017. Probably.
+ Relax, NBC is committed to that Cruel Intentions remake; they’ve just got to find the right digital platform to screen it because it’s “even sexier” than they imagined.
+ Jane Lynch is teaming up with Christopher Guest again, this time for his new Netflix series Mascots, which will premiere in October.
+ Betty’s coming back to Masters of Sex season four.
+ Obviously Rosie is going to be in Hairspray LIVE! (I wish she’d go back to The Fosters and straighten Brandon out in the meantime.)
+ Shannon Purser knows you love Barb.
+ E! will pull the plug on I Am Cait after season two.
Queer Humans, Out and About
+ Yes, in fact, we are going to be covering the Olympics. We now have an entire Slack channel devoted to it. Until that fateful day (which will occur in one day), I thought you might like to know that the U.S. Women’s National Team is ready to kick your ass, a thing FiveThirtyEight has endeavored to back up with statistics.
+ Kate McKinnon sure does love to talk about her cat.
+ GLAAD’s gonna honor Hannah Hart, yes they are.
So, no Jessica Jones until late 2018, after Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders releases?
You can’t do this to me Netflix!!!!!!!
At the very least we will likely still see Jessica Jones in at least two of those three projects. Definitely, The Defenders. She is a big part of that.
Until tomorrow, let me just say YEAAAAAAAAHH CANADA! 2-0 win over Australia! And also, good job USWNT.
Brazilian fans were heckling Hope Solo for those mosquito net pictures she posted.
Also Elena Delle Donne came out today.
I am in Rio for the Olympics and I’m beyond excited
Elena Della Donne!!!!
I am working at a summer camp with caddy, painfully straight coworkers (I habe never wanted to be at a cp more) and will miss most of the Olympics w just one day off/week. But today is my day off so I got to watch the uswnt match at midnight local time.
Then I read about Della Donne who is 1. such a badass player and 2. The freaking cutest and how wonderfully simple the Vogue article was about it (just ‘oh yeah she and her fiancée Amanda…) and I felt like I was given a second wind for the summer.
But then it got even better when I read that softball is coming back to the Olympics for the Tokyo games!!!!
I really wanted Australia and Canada to tie because I love both teams so damn much but happy for the Canadians.
I think Solo getting heckled is hilarious, for a number of reasons one of which is that her zika post had like 21 bottles of mosquito spray in the pic and only 3 were Cutter brand. Cutter just inked a deal to sponsor uswnt AND the nwsl. She wrote a blog post days before complaining about lack of money and conditions in nwsl (legit concerns) and could have shown a little love for the newest sponsor since nwsl desperately needs more of them!
ANYWAY enjoy Rio!! I’m jealous and happy for you.
Also after about 30 tries he Catholic school WiFi at camp stopped blocking Autostraddle as a ‘sex ed’ site but won’t let me comment. Huh. (Thanks 4G connection for taking the relay)
Also on Drop the Mic, Cara rapped to her rivals Dave Franco and James Corden: “you’re both shorter than me, and I think you’ll find / I’ve hooked up with hotter girls than both of you combined.”
And obviously she was crowned the winner.
<3 <3 <3
Be still, my heart!
I wish E! Had renewed Just Jillian for season 2. I honestly liked that show
Same!
I’ve watched the Kate McKinnon cat video ~3 times and I cannot get over, “who is your cat?”
omfg the Kate + cat interview compilation!!! the first thing I did after watching ghostbusters was watch a ton of interviews with her, and I loved that she talked about her cat in basically all of them, and there were still SO MANY adorable bits I hadn’t seen!
I’m excited for rugby in the Olympics
I’ll be watching women’s rugby on saturday. Looking forward to it
Ok I guess Kate McKinnon + cat is the new Kristen Bell + Sloth as in this is the cutest ever and I’m in love.
Thank you for the vapid fluff link which reminded me that Cara was once with Michelle Rodriguez! Good times.
More TV news:
– I’ve long kept “Power” on that list of shows that I’d watch when I had some free time but never got around to it…but it just jumped to the must-watch pile because on Sunday, Tony Award winning actress, Anika Noni Rose, joined the show as a lesbian cop. 50 Cent is an executive producer on the show and the character’s based, in part, on his lesbian mother. From what I’ve read, her character seems like a combination of Kima Greggs and Snoop Pearson of “The Wire.”
Princess Tiana is gay, y’all…now I’ve got to watch.
– Also? I’d make another plug for General Hospital which has continued their exploration of Kristina’s sexuality over the last few weeks. Yes, it’s a soap, so there’s a tendency towards melodrama but I’ve been pleasantly surprised how vigilant the writers have been in avoiding cliched tropes. To give a brief run-down:
There’s plenty more to the story but I don’t want to spoil it…it really is worth a watch. Catch up with the entire storyline here.
So I don’t give a damn about superhero anything, but Adam Beach is in Suicide Squad which is a BIG DEAL because he’s not even playing a written-Native character. He’s playing a super smart supervillain with no stereotypical Native qualities. It makes me so happy. I fucking love Adam Beach.
This is exactly why I was excited for this movie, until I saw what they did with his character. Awful.
To read the interview you’ll have to either subscribe to Elle’s newsletter or confess “I am not interested in celebrity friendships.”
Ok, but what if I AM interested in celebrity friendships, but still don’t want to subscribe? This is very rock/hard place.
SO EXCITED about more Arrested Development, even though it’s probably going to be even worse than Season 4!
I’m upset about the straight washing of Kate McKinnon’s life in that A.V. Club article…
Agreed. She also dodged the Holtzmann/gay issue big-time in this morning’s (Aug. 4) NY Times Arts section. :(
I saw Suicide Squad today and really enjoyed it. The movie was gorgeous to look at and the action sequences were good. Margot Robbie, Viola Davis and Will Smith especially were great. The storyline was a bit convoluted, but I find that with most of my Superhero movies, and it didn’t stop me from being invested. I laughed, I even teared up at a few bits. For me it was definitely worth seeing on the big screen.
Suicide Squad was awesome, and nearly every fan agrees. On this one the Critics were completely wrong.
And lest we forget, even of Suicide Squad totally sucks, it opens up the possibility of live action Harley/Poison Ivy on screen in the future. They’re cannon and way better than Harley/Joker!! So… I’m still excited to see it. :)
