Stef and Scully / NYC
“This is the first time I ever dressed Scully up for Halloween and as you can see, she was 100% into it. Since then she’s been a shark, a peacock, a bat, a bumblebee and an elephant.”
Jillian and Peet / 39, 6 / NY
“Peet is a rescue from South Carolina. He got brought up to Long Island via Last Chance Animal Rescue, and we were the lucky ones to get to the adoption event first. He got out of the truck and into our car, basically. People were asking us seconds after we had adopted him if he was available, but he was ours! He chose us – with a little help from a 12 year old daughter of one of the LCAR volunteers peer pressuring us, and a whole lot of adorable. Best decision we ever made!
The best thing about him is he makes me talk to people. He is a town celebrity and makes everyone happy – especially me. He keeps me company while my wife is drowning in work as a resident. Also his flippy ears. We take him everywhere we possibly can, to the point of skipping wineries that won’t allow dogs – trust me, it’s a big deal to skip a winery on the North Fork of Long Island, and planning vacations and days around his participation. He is super easy to please and loves nothing more than a new parking lot to explore, so he’s an excellent co-pilot. His answer for what we like to do together is “Eat foods”.
He is a double dapple long haired dachshund, which is super rare, and almost no one has ever seen before, so he is mostly white, with blue eyes and black spots so he is inherently a little weird-looking. He will literally stop traffic, foot and automobile, except he’s not super into people – he will make it 90% to them and then make them come that lasssst little bit. He’s handsome and he knows it. And once we were walking him downtown, and someone yelled “Hey Peet” from the window of a passing truck – we humans had no idea who the person was, but they knew Peet. Instagram: @PJ_Peetyboo.”
Kells and MC Sprout / 39, 10 / Lake Worth, FL
“I met Sprout at the dog park the day she was adopted from the animal shelter by a friend of a friend. I fell in love with this ragtag little 3 month old pup. Another 3 months later, I found myself driving her to her new home with me. She’s been my sidekick ever since. She’s named after a member of the band Northern State. I’d just fallen in love with them after seeing them open for Tegan & Sara about a month earlier. Sprout is super chill, extremely good-natured, and very portable, so I take her with me everywhere. We live in a very dog-friendly area, so Sprout and I walk everywhere, go to bars and restaurants, chill at the beach, and hear live music regularly.
She absolutely thinks she’s a person. Every day when I return from work, she spends about 3-5 minutes “talking” to me. It’s pretty much the cutest thing ever. Her weirdest trait: she won’t let me out of the bathroom without licking the water off of my freshly showered legs. Her Instragram is (obvs) @MCSprout.”
Dekel, Michal, Luka / 37, 33, 9 / Dead Sea, Israel
“This picture was taken on our wedding day. Luka was the cutest, most nervous, ring bearer. She was a stray puppy found in Jerusalem, and like many Jerusalem natives, has deep phobia of water. She also pees with both her rear legs in the air in a weird Kung fu stance, just to make sure the pee won’t touch her legs. Hiking is a different story. She loves climbing even the steepest mountains, and getting really close to the cliff’s edge, without any consideration of our fragile hearts. On weekends, she sleeps in until 11AM, then sunbaths for another couple of hours on the balcony, reminding us what life is all about.”
Ryn and Moose / 38, 17 / Brooklyn, NY
“Moose was my mom’s little guy until she went on vacation and left him with my wife and me for safekeeping. He got so attached to us that she decided to give him to us on a permanent basis. His name is technically Matisse, but as pet names tend to do, it’s evolved (variations include Mr. Moose, Moose Moose, Moo, Müs, Der Elch (supposedly the German word for moose)). Once I tried to affectionately call him a douche and a dork at the same time and ended up calling him a duke. He spends most of his old age sleeping on the edge of our bed, completely ignoring the cat-sized bed we bought on his behalf. My wife and I argue constantly regarding his (fuzzy) body of knowledge (me: he is all-knowing and wise! her: he knows NOTHING). His meows are loud, regretful, and sound uncannily like someone saying “hello” at a funeral.”
Jenn, Cait, Kennedy / 26, 29, 6 / NYC
“Kennedy was adopted from a no-kill animal rescue and very quickly decided that she was in charge of the apartment. We let her believe that in exchange for getting rid of mice and begrudgingly letting us take seasonal/costumed photoshoots of her. Her favorite activities are sleeping, terrorizing the geckos, playing with literal trash on the ground, and running around at 3am. We’ve trained Kennedy to walk on her back legs when we feed her treats, but she has yet to break the habit of snacking on cheese and olive oil when we’re not paying attention. Occasionally we take her outside on her leash, but she has a long way to go to reach “dog in a bag on the subway” level. Kennedy doesn’t have an Instagram because of the very real fear that she’ll be infinitely more popular than us, but gets tagged with #LesbianCatsOfInstagram.”
Laura and Boriss / Toronto
“Boriss’ hobbies include long walks in the garden, sleeping in boxes and eating fruit, particularly watermelon. This beautiful beast came from the animal shelter in my ex’s hometown, where I fell in love with his whiskers online months before actually being able to adopt him. Apparently he was a jerk to everyone at the shelter while he was there, obviously because he knew his human would be coming for him soon.”
Katie, Al, HP Lovecat / Chicago, IL
“HP came with his name, but he also answers to: Little B, Tiny Butt, Son, Perfect Being of Light and Joy, Butternut, BunBun, Pumpkin. He spends the long days in anxious vibrations, and all night gently smacking Al’s face with the softest of paw. Katie is a Cool Mom and spoils him rotten. He loves holding hands and hates the squirrel out front.”
Crystal, Monday, St Mark / Chicago, IL
“We adopted Monday from a shelter, alongside his brother, St Mark. He’s such a weirdo! He likes licking and nibbling my shins obsessively while I’m sleeping. Here we are testing out our new selfie stick. St Mark was named after a part of NYC I used to love, but we mostly just call him floofy. His favorite things include sitting in cookware and knocking over freshly cracked cans of LaCroix.”
Maddie, Maddie, Radar / 26, 28, 1 / New Orleans, LA
“After 2.5 years of dating and a year of living together we decided we needed something to pour our maternal love into. Thus Radar was found on Petfinder (thanks, Take Paws Rescue!). Radar was a stray discovered at s high kill shelter an hour outside New Orleans. He had signs of abuse and advanced heartworm. His amazing foster mom nursed him back to health and we took him home two months later! We both love MASH and he had sweet eyes like Radar O’Reilly. Plus he’s a sighthound (he’s part Italian greyhound) so he has great sight and hearing, also like Radar.
The best thing about him is that he’s like Velcro! He’ll sweetly follow us from room to room, not needing anything, just wanting to be close to us. He also has a slightly curly tail that he wraps around your wrist when you pet his butt. He runs like such a weirdo! He has long, goofy legs that flail like he’s wearing flippers. It looks like he’s going to trip himself. Instagram: @Radar_Gaydar.”

So much <3
This gallery is going to be my new go to happy place.
I want to pet all of them. Even the house plant.
Also, I really, really wanted to participate in this one, but unfortunately my cat doesn’t live with me and I couldn’t make it over to my mom’s in time for the deadline. I even had the photo all planned out!
Wow, after looking through all of these I have that kind of post-TV-binge feeling, like I am slightly stunned and unsure what to do with my feelings or my body.
Also, did I miss Sue Perkins the sourdough?!
seconded on missing the sourdough, @clochou!
Haha I was about to comment the same thing
1. Weare, NH is one town over from where I grew up! Wow!!
2. Everyone’s pets are so charming, omg
3. I did not know there were this many queers in Ohio?
4. Marty and Olive are delighted to have been featured <3 <3 <3
Having a real moment over here with all the cute.
I’m also shocked that the entirety of my crazy dog lady verbal diarrhea made the cut.
This post combines two of the best things in the world:queer women and pets.
I am, however, disappointed that none of us sent in a photo of 300 pet rocks.
Yes! So 200% true
I love all of this so much!
And if we’re also moved by this gallery, see about finding a new furry friend
https://www.petfinder.com
Carms, where is Friday, dog supermodel?
I messed up the dates and didn’t submit!
:(
I feel like this is something that can be rectified, also probably needs to be rectified as it’s unfair if the world cannot witness Friday’s glory.
Hanging out here for the rest of my life if anyone needs me
yup yup
I met some wonderful pups hiking Triple Falls in DuPont National Park this summer. One of my favorite parts of hiking is all the dogs I meet. I used to have a Springer that hiked all over Pisgah National Forest and The Smokey’s with me. As well as playing on the beach in Isle of Palms. It’s been a couple of years since my last Springer passed away. I have had all kinds of dogs, but we foster Springers. Hopefully, my sister and I will be able to adopt a couple of dogs soon. We already named them Biscuit and Grits.
Hello I am in love with everybody of every species in this gallery.
Just stopped in to say…Vasi weighs more than I do.
I am his owner and he weighs more than me.
Lovely! So heartwarming to see the photos and read how all these lovely animals found their human companions.
ok do you all have professional photos taken with your pets or what?
…wait, can I have professional photos taken with my pet?
Right? I tried to use my good camera but that was a no-go with Mr. Grumpy Pants, so I ended up having to use my crappy phone camera instead. I am impressed with everyone else’s well-behaved fur friends.
(To be fair though he was only grumpy because I made him wear a costume)
Everytime I take a pic of reptar I am RISKING MY VERY LIFE because he hates phones. I think the screen doesn’t refresh fast enough for bird eyes to make sense of them? I’m p sure phones are murdery strobe lights for him
Maybe a little food before and after the shoot could make it more professional? Food to distract then food as reward when your pet does a good job.
yes, you can! or painted portraits. I do pet watercolors. check out my ig @_welltrained_
Yes you can have professional photos taken with your pets (says the woman who has signed her dogs up to be calendar models).
I’ve done that before but Boris was very scared in the studio and tucked his ears all the way back. I sent one of those I turns to my dad and he answered me “your poor dog has no ears”
If this was a coffee table book, I would read it every night when I got home from work.
I second the coffee table book concept. This needs to be a coffee table book.
Or take it to work so You can be paid as You read it.
So much cuteness! I thought I was going to die there for a minute.
Glad to report that the result was this instead:
BIRB QUEERS UNITE
Also wow wasnt aware we were meant to write essays on our animals?? I worked so hard* to condense mine
*”hard”, “for five minutes”, potato, potahto,
I admired yours for its conciseness!
I wish I knew about this! I would love for you guys to meet my pet cock, Pirri, 10! I love that guy. ?????
***Would have loved for you guys to meet..
This is so great!
You are all so adorable <3
And your pets are cute, too
So many good animals and so many good animal names and so many good faces and pictures and ahhh! So much good I so desperately needed today. <3
I would like to see data charts from this information
Thank the gods for this post today. I was already crying last night out of overwhelmed-the-world-is-the-worst-dumpster-fire-ever types of emotions. Then I woke up to the tragic news about vegas. This is a nice reminder that not all is bad.
Thanks.
ps. It looks like my pic with my dog is lumped into the folks pictures above me.
Oh thank you, this helps. Sorry I didn’t get it together to send a picture of my rescue dog.
All of your pets are adorable and I’m jealous that I am a poor grad student with a lease that forbids dogs and cats.
Also I reeeeeally hope the next gallery is a Halloween costume gallery.
A+++ scrolling experience. Would scroll ag- WILL scroll again!
Oh how I needed this gallery today! Rather than try to pick favorites, I’ll simply say that y’all and your pets are just *the cutest*. Thanks, everyone! <3
Don’t pretend. You know you love my girl the most.
Shhhhh, don’t tell the other dogs but Luna is pretty much the cutest ;)
This is the best thing ever. I have officially followed all of your instagram accounts, because whenever the world is bad I follow another 20 or so animal instas and this was a perfect opportunity. This thread is amazing and I wish I hadn’t forgotten to send in pictures of my amazing cats. You can see them on my instagram if you want; my username there is also ankhmorpork. It’s 90% my cats with a few selfies here and there. I don’t pet sit as much anymore but I tend to take pictures of the dogs and cats I sit for as well.
P.S. Atlanta people, we should become friends so I can pet your dogs. And because half my queer friends have moved away and you seem like fun people. But also, dogs.
https://www.instagram.com/ankhmorpork/ because I forgot to link it in my comment.
Oh, my goodness. OH, MY GOODNESS! My heart. I can’t handle this right now. Look at all of this cuteness. Precious babies.
This is everything! Cuteness overload!
So many beautiful humans with amazing animal friends! ?
I was kind of expecting at least one snake or lizard though…but I’m very glad nobody sent in a photo with a pet tarantula! ?
I love animals and I love you guys and everything is so cute and let’s choose to ignore the rest of the world, just for today
@rousrose Rous Rose your submission was adorable and Nunu is so cute!
Thank you so much, Carmen! I told Nunu what you wrote, and now he’s considering signing up for Belgium’s Next Top Model.
Gotta get perfecting that smize.
Your Nunu and my Zuzu should hang out.
(…That sounds like a euphemism but it’s not.)
I ship them already!
I love to see former campers and their pets!
Where is the sourdough starter, though? I was promised a sourdough starter
WANTED: SUE PERKINS
Where are you Sue Perkins?!
She could at yeast have checked in with us
It’s no time rye but it’s okay
It’s not rye but it’s okay.
Dammit autocorrect
She could just be shy, dough. Perhaps we oat to give her some space.
YOUR PETS ARE ALL SO GREAT but now i feel guilty that i only posted my dog and not my cat, because he is also a star. instead of using a litter box, he likes to jump over our back fence, crap in the neighbor’s yard, and then come home, because cats are dicks. we used to be okay with this because we hated our old neighbors but now we have new neighbors, a nice gay couple who love him, so now he goes over there to crap and then they let him in their back door for food and treats. he has a second family and thinks we don’t know because he still comes home wanting dinner. anyway that’s my cat and i need you to know about his antics.
my sister also has a ball python. she sleeps most of the day and hates men, so, ya know, relatable.
This is the best photo gallery ever!! I just went and followed all the Instagram accounts! I kinda wish this was an ongoing queers with pets instagram. Haha. I also really want a cat now! I also absolutely loved that Kristin Russo and Jenny Owen Youngs had their cat here too and an instagram!! So exciting!! This has made my day. <3
this was soooo lovelyyy!!!
anna^2 i really want a christmas card from you and yours. that is year-round fridge material.
OMG the adorbs. Part of me regrets not including my parents’ new puppy Ms Frizzle for the amazing cuteness factor, but Mikoto’s my priority. I was getting nervous that we weren’t going to be on the list but turns out we were just near the end.
I miss my camp buds and now I miss your pets too ❤️
First thing I did was Ctrl+F my cat’s name, and then look through the gallery once I knew he made it in ~^_^~
It is 7:25 am on Bainbridge Island in Washington, and I have been up since 5:10 am to take the ferry over here – so forgive my emotions when I say that all of you and your bbs are perfect. Gosh. Thank you for sharing.
I thought my favourite page on the internet was a cache of 215 pictures of Kate McKinnon at the Emmys, but I see I was wrong. I live here now.
This gallery makes me SO happy. Like it is the most heartwarming, relaxing, adorable thing ever. Thank you for putting this together.
Shoutout to the people whose dogs are named Henry and Hazel – those are our dogs’ names too! <3
Consider this my formal request for a “Queers and Their Pets” dating app
I’m going back through this a page a day and reading every single word you all wrote about your furbabies, and I just laughed out loud at this: “fun fact: if you name your very independent dog Stella, every trip to the dog park turns into A Streetcar Named Desire.”
Oh wow how did I miss this the first time around?
That was me and I’m so happy someone appreciated it!
Yo bookshelf, I’m really happy for you, Imma let you finish but Pets is the best gallery of all time.
So good! I particularly love Boris the show cat who reminds me so much of my cat Spike. She was a show cat in her own mind.
The submission period was midterms crunch time for me so here’s my girls doing what they do best
https://instagram.com/p/BM4qNrWAzsk/
Amber, the runt of an oopsie litter between a hunting dog and herding dog.
Likes guarding and playing catch but not necessarily fetch.
https://instagram.com/p/BRqGoYkglkc/
Daisy Mae, abandoned pup and former fosterling her prime directive is cuddles. Has no sense of self preservation, she’s probably part terrier.
Wow, I wrote a god damn essay. I am sorry ya’ll lmao. I love everyone’s pets!!
If you and your doggo live near Sacramento, CA, we need to meet up ASAP!!!
Beau and I are on page 13 and also we would love to be friends. He needs practice making friends because he’s not great at it and friends confuse him. Shoot me a message… I’m much easier to contact on Instagram or Facebook, so swap details with me and you can play with my dog?
So many new instagram friends for Puck! I’m very glad we can keep this gallery going on instagram ^_^ And it’s nice to see there’s another mischievous Puck out there :)
What about a new round of queers and their pets?
