This week’s Extra! Extra! covers a few topics that haven’t gotten much attention in our coverage lately: big tech and the surveillance state, a look at America’s broken education system from several angles and violence against women. We continue to provide an update on the Black Lives Matter protests, immigration and the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is an aching, lonely, pining, sorrowful, huge queer mess of extremely gay emotions. “Betty, will you kiss me on the porch in front of all your stupid friends?” COME ON.
You’ll find odes to Lily Tomlin and Ellen Degeneres with only the occasional nod to comedy notables like Moms Mabley, Wanda Sykes and Margaret Cho, making queer comedy look like a whitewashed dyke party. You won’t find much evidence of the many queer comedians of color who are well-established, wildly successful and wonderfully, deliciously funny. Here’s a very incomplete list of some of those comedians.
“I too am in ‘active negotiations’ to include LGBT content in my holidays – by setting up an OkCupid profile.”
“I watched it all in one night, vacillating from helpless laughter (Olivia Coleman’s line readings!!!) to shocked surprise (“Where did you just go?”) and when it was over I sent profanity littered texts about it to one of my best friends, then watched the entire season again.”
“There is something very powerful about direct community aid because it allows people to bypass institutional barriers and access what they need. There isn’t a Board of Directors or a group of powerful people controlling what to do with the funds. It’s just community members supporting other community members.”
The aftermath of covering protests in Portland, how the WNBA is honoring Breonna Taylor, France’s first transgender mayor and more!
“My biggest relationship fear is that my desire to not be controlled means that I’ll be alone forever and never receive any feeling of comfort or security. Yikes! Typing that out was fun.”
This list includes a variety of different genres. The only requirements were a main queer woman or non-binary character, written by a Nordic / Scandinavian author, and set in a Nordic / Scandinavian country or featuring a Nordic / Scandinavian protagonist. Enjoy!
Heather Morris dances to Naya Rivera’s “Radio Silence,” BSC members as knights of the minor arcana, a new series for Pose creator Steven Canals, and Xena at her absolute gayest.
Where are my children? What time is it? How big is an official regulation rugby pitch? I will know the answer to one of these questions.
A. Andrews’ comic A Quick and Easy Guide to Sex and Disability is a well-written, thoughtful, and enjoyable guide that I strongly recommend to all disabled and able-bodied people alike
Melissa King can cook for me anytime and King Princess is practicing makeup!
Even if you feel utterly discouraged, Leo season brings an opportunity to take pride in the things we do well, the unique aspects of ourselves that bring pleasure and satisfaction. What sets you apart? What gives you purpose? What are you fighting for?
If you’ve read this far I think it’s pretty clear that I love a highly competent femme with a lot of personal problems.
There is a different level of intimacy and affirmation that I have found when having sex with other fat people. Thin people approach the fat body like a series of insecurities. They see the swell of a stomach or rolls of fat on the back and assume that you hate those parts of your body. When another fat person touches me, it is to be made whole.
Honoring John Lewis’s legacy of good trouble, some quick looks at the violence from federal officers in Portland, an upset in the NWSL Challenge Cup quarterfinals and more!
“Here is the good news—your best friend does have a therapist! Here is the bad news—that therapist is you!”
With gay bars all but indefinitely closed, and other businesses slowly reopening, how are queer businesses surviving & supporting their community amidst a pandemic?
