Pop Culture Fix: F*ck Yeah, Javicia Leslie Does Her Own “Batwoman” Stunts

Well hi there, friend! Here is your Wednesday Pop Culture Fix, before a (hopefully) long weekend!

+ Finding Forester is getting a TV reboot, but!

“The project will follow along the same lines as the Gus Van Sant-directed film, in which Connery plays an eccentric author who finds himself the mentor of a young Black teen, Jamal, played by Rob Brown. But, one of the big differences between the film and the TV show will be that Connery’s character will be retconned into a ‘reclusive lesbian author whose career was ruined by a public scandal.’ Also, both characters will be Black.

+ Amber Riley’s big year — finally! — continues: She’s got a new musical comedy called Dream in the works at ABC.

+ Heather Matarazzo and Shannon Purser on playing lesbian icons in Equal.

+ Jenna Lyons is back.

+ The Transgender Film Center is offering grants to trans filmmakers. I, for one, am excited to see what Drew does with her money. :)

+ Wowowow! Here’s a movie you haven’t heard about in a long time: The funny, stylish Jennifer’s Body was an unjust victim of Diablo Cody backlash.

+ Javicia Leslia yelling “fuck yeah!” while doing stunts for Batwoman is everything I wanted to see today.

  1. I’m of two minds about Javicia Leslia doing her own stunts. It’s great to have an actress who can stand up to the physicality of that, instead of just a model. On the other hand, the reason that Ruby Rose isn’t Batwoman anymore is because she got hurt REALLY badly doing that same stuff. I’d much rather have a stuntperson do those, and for Javicia to stay safe.

    • Also, there was another crew member gravely injured during filming, so it seems like a really unsafe set in general, and not just Ruby Rose not being able to handle her stunts. As much as I think Rose was miscast, they totally threw her under the bus when she left the show in a way that minimized their failure to protect her safety and implied she was lazy/spoiled, and that really rubbed me the wrong way. I don’t know that I trust these people to take good care of Javicia or their crew members.

    • This. Stunt doubles aren’t used because actors are useless. They’re used because stunts are dangerous and if an actor gets injured, they may not be able to play the part, whereas they can hire a different stunt double next time.

Javicia looks badass as fuck tho. Thanks for spotlighting her, Heather.

  2. I ride for Jennifer’s Body and how gross men took over the marketing and ROBBED the world of a snark scary gory teen dream movie.
