Autostraddle Live! Come See Me Talk About Stuff in Chicago Next Week!

future lesbians at the university of chicago

In my continued tour of “colleges that wouldn’t have granted me admission in 1999 despite my superior GPA and overall excellence,” next week I’ll be hitting up The University of Chicago to give a talk sponsored by “Queers & Associates,” which is a campus group for LGBTQI nerds!

Fun fact #1: You know that shady photograph of me I use as my “gravatar” here on Autostraddle? Although it’s too small and dark to make out, I’m actually wearing a Chicago Cubs hat in that photo. They really do have the cutest hats.

When: Thursday March 1st, 8:00 PM (they’ll be serving an actual dinner at 7:30, though, so you should probs show up for that.)
Where: HARPER 140 at The University of Chicago
Who: Me!
Facebook Page for Event: Right here
How Much: Free, duh

What will this talk be about, you may be asking yourselves. Well, now you and me have something in common, as I’m presently asking myself the same thing. Rest easy that I have a strong track record of producing last-minute brilliance and to be honest I do have an outline and some vague ideas but nothing that I’m married to. Because I can’t get married, it’s illegal! (Expect lots of jokes like that.)

Anyhow, you should come! If you have any feelings about what you think I should base my talk around, please share in the comments, you know how I do.

Fun Fact #2: My Mom grew up in Chicago.

Fun Fact #3: I was birthed in Champaign-Urbana, which is in the same state.

Fun Fact #4: Coming to this event will make you a better person.

  1. Holy shit! I am legit going to be in Chicago for a conference next week, I’m so going to be there! Even if I will be alone/awkward

      • AWP = yes! If anyone knows of gay AWP events, we should start a chain schedule and represent. I know I’ll be wearing my Autostraddle v-neck (unfortunately under many many layers, I imagine.) But psyched!

      • I am going to AWP! I’m going to be awkwardly sitting at a booth alone for a day until the Editors of the magazine I work for get there, too. People should come and visit me at the Green Mountain Review booth! And yes to Gay event chains. I am going with other students who I don’t know and am going to be a little country bumpkin freaking out in the big city. Rachel, where will you be at AWP?

        • During the book fair I’ll be at the Third Coast Magazine table. We’ll have free kazoos, so you’re probably going to want to stop by.

        • Hello ! I’m going to AWP too, helping at Antioch University’s booth! I’m not travel-savvy, so hopefully I can find the way from the conference to this event. Hope to meet some of you at AWP!

  2. If it wasn’t a Thursday I WOULD TOTALLY COME IN FOR THIS.

However, you are sure to meet a bunch of delightful Chistraddlers. And they are delightful.

(Hey. Hey Chistrads. You should spirit her away to FKA after this. I’m just sayin).

  3. so excited! can anyone just wander in off the street and go to this? (“anyone” being a non-student, like me.)

  4. I want to go to there, and I think I shall. Assuming I can get there in time from work. Chicagostraddlers, represent.

  5. You were borned in Cham-bana?! I had no idea. I was born/raised in Mattoon. East-central IL queers FTW!

  6. I think this is the most excited I’ve ever been about going out in February in Chicago. Thank you Riese/Autostraddle!!

  7. hi everyone! I’m one of the people planning this event!

and, if you’re planning on attending and you see this comment, try to RSVP on the FB page so we can get a rough estimate of how many are coming!

    • There is no Harper Center. Just go to Harper the building and look for the largest collection of young queer women on campus ever!

  8. Hey CHIstraddlers! I am taking a bus down from Madison to this smokin’ event. Anyone have a couch I could sleep on? Or ideas of inexpensive housing for a night? I am open to suggestions, and nothing is stopping me from attending.

  9. THIS WAS AMAZING RIESE!! PLEASE COME TO CHICAGO MORE OFTEN.
I had NO flipping idea what when on behind the scenes. And now, I just love everything about autostraddle even more. speechless.
