The GLAAD Award winners will be distributed and honored in three ceremonies: New York on March 16th, Los Angeles on 420, and San Francisco on May 11th. Y’all, we were nominated for a GLAAD AWARD!!
congrats!! well-deserved
NO PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, REALLY?
But yay team!
Awesome, AS! Shit is happening for y’all!
Okay, firstly, Cloud Atlas? Really? There are so many racial issues in that movie…goodness gracious. No.
Also Honey Boo Boo? I mean, I love that a family such as them is very accepting of the gays, but still, I really think “Outstanding” is kinda pushing it…
Okay. Rant over.
Yay, Autostraddle!
Also, Seventeen, while being very sex-positive and providing some quality sex ed in their magazine, is pretty overly heteronormative. Occasionally they’ll mention bisexuality, but that’s about as queer as they take it.
Yeah, as someone who spent a lot of time reading those types of magazines as a teen, I don’t have a lot of patience for the attitude of treating lesbians/bisexuals as a Very Special Article topic but otherwise talking about their readers as though they are all interested (exclusively) in boys.
And it’s not even like they think you like boys a little bit…it’s like your whole goddamn life is wrapped up in the opposite sex and how to get them to look at you/text you/hold hands with you/whateverthefuck.
It’s that whole prince charming narrative, I guess. Not my cup of tea. I thought I liked boys at least a little bit in high school, but not nearly that much. Maybe because I was a total lesbo, but also because maybe my life’s purpose is not to find all of my happiness and value in another person, and ESPECIALLY not in a man…
I totally second what you are saying here K! My mom used to buy me teen magazines (to discourage me from spending all of my time reading automotive magazines). Even as a young bisexual, I found the overt focus on men really messed with my head. I spent many of my teenage years trying to figure out why I didn’t feel the voracious need to be in any relationship, even aside from my confusion over why I found the girls in the magazine so much more attractive than the ubiquitous-man-with-six-pack of the month.
This makes me glad.
Autostraddle just keeps getting cooler.
Hey Sawyer will you email me on [email protected], I will explain when I will email back but it’s regarding a writing job :) x
Yay Autostraddle! Yay Perks! That movie made me bawl with its beautiful, perfectly timed musical ending.
If Batwoman doesn’t win best comic I’m going to be seriously disappointed. I mean Buffy and X-Men do have gay characters in them but Batwoman is the lead of her own series and it’s the better written of all the nominees. It should really win on that alone.
I completely agree with you. That’s a shocker I know. lol
Oh yes! I mean, sure, Buffy is exciting and fun to read but it’s Batwoman who’s thrilling and addictive.
Woot woot!
Yay! That’s so exciting! It’s great that you’re getting more acknowledgement for all of the awesome work you do.
Also, Julie Goldman was also in the first episode of The New Normal. A very nice surprise when I started watching it last night! I still like Modern Family a lot better as a show, though. I haven’t seen Happy Endings.
sooooooooooo happy about this!
OH MY GLOB, this is fantastic! Congratulations!!
Most thoroughly deserved nomination ever – well done!
Is this thing televised?
Does anyone know what Rachel Maddow’s “End of an Error” thing is? Would like to watch, but my google skills are failing me.
This was well-earned, Autostraddle. Congrats!
AUTOWIN AUTOWIN AUTOWIN
fuckyeahthiscomment
Congratulations AutoStraddle team!!!
May my new blog (SoNotStraight.com) one day get even 1/20 of the success yours has achieved so far.
Lots of other good nominees out there too.
This past summer I basically lived and breathed Frank Ocean (so many words, oh so many feelings). So I’m VERY happy to see him nominated and I hope he wins. And the nomination of Mosquita y Mari makes me want to see the film even more. I cannot wait for it to be released somewhere so I can get it. Or if it could come to a theatre near me that would be even better. Then again, being that I live in the Dirty Dirty South, that latter wish is unlikely to happen.
Days of Our Lives is nominated?!! yaaay!
WE’RE GOING TO A WIN A THING
Super awesome news!
Congrats!! I have been wondering how long this would take :). I have to say, The LA Complex is an amazing and sophisticated show and I will fight you to the death in the TV series category vs Degrassi. Such a GOOD SHOW.
4 for you, Autostraddle!
Sorry, but did no one else notice the lady loving Lauren was receiving in the A-Camp pic?
Coz……. That’s like, all I could think about for the rest of the article, sorry Riese.
RIGHT!? I couldn’t focus on anything else.
Awesome! Go team!
it must be REALLY bad in “Daily Drama” bussiness if your pick is B&B…
Holy shit! O.O
Oh, and congratulations!
I told my gay male bestie, “Did you see that Towleroad is nominated for a GLAAD award?”
and he responded, “Did you see that Autostraddle was?”
it was really cute.
I like Towleroad a lot, their coverge of court cases and legal analysis are very good.
I’m so happy for everyone! This past year was amazing for autostraddle and I think things will just get better. :)
I have to say I was a little wtf about some of these though. No Pretty Little Liars? Paige’s storyline was one of the best ever for any show that’s not on pay cable in this country. How could they ignore it and put Glee of all things on there?! Or Smash and L.A. Complex. What? And Sister’s Sister is a pretty strange choice too. It has one character who calls herself a lesbian but we never see her in a relationship or even interacting with another queer woman. All we do see is her stealing a guy’s sperm. That’s great representation how, exactly?
I am happy the LA Complex has even been NOTICED. First, its the creators of Degrassi, so its basically all the stuff that they can’t air on television for kids- its racy, witty and risky. This show, like Degrassi, treats queerness with a “so what” and a N.B.D. (sort of like the end of the Carly Rae Jepson video, if you catch my drift). The LA Complex features many lesbian/queer plot twists, as well as same sex couples making out at parties in the background and its treated as a non-issue. Girls hook up with girls and don’t have identity crisis about it. I have to also argue its actually really well written and features a ton of diversity, but with with a shitty time slot nobody ever will watch a little show about Canadian illegals living in Los Angeles, because its target demographic is basically… well, me.
Also, congrats AutoStraddle! Good stuff! We wouldn’t expect anything less.
Can’t think of a thing more worthy of all the awards. Enjoy it A team!
I had a dream last night of the opening fire of A-Camp 3.0. Riese just walks out and raises the GLADD award above her head triumphantly and 400 queers loose their minds.
i hope the GLAAD Award is a baby lion
Outstanding Reality Program:
– The Amazing Race (just above The Real L Word in the list).
BAM!!
Well deserved.Autostraddle does an amazing job bringing its readers news about real queer women, not pretend ones. That makes it authentic and believable. Other blogs spend precious time pontificating on individuals who have nothing whatsoever to do with the LGBTQ community such that at times one tends to forget that they are supposed to be queer-centric blogs. It’s frustrating!
Autostraddle reports on women who are actually lesbian, bi, trans. It can pick an ordinary Jane Public off the street and make her a calendar girl, a feature/guest writer, a straddler on the street, an NSFW feature etc. That’s powerful visibility. I cannot begin to tell you how tired I am of reading countless articles about women who are not even gay because somebody has a crush on them. That does not happen on AS.
Thanks for keeping it real and showing your readers that they need not hide the fact that they are butch, bois, ultra-feminine, ultra-queer,indescribable. That we don’t all need to subscribe to a certain image in order to please advertisers/funders/sponsors.
You do You!!
thank you! (“fawning over straight actresses who play queer characters” is on the list of “people/things we will never talk about” in our style manual)
Thank goodness for that.Crushing on straight girls sucks enough in real life without having to do it on supposedly lesbian blogs too.
I know it’s coming across pretty serious and heavy-handed, but when I think of all the months I spent believing that Hope Solo was one of us because of being blindsided by somebody’s ‘arm porn’ I still want to kick myself.
Chronicle! Anthony Everett! My inner 85 year old is squealing with delight!
couldn’t think of a more deserving bunch of writers. Congrats!
