I’m pinch-hitting for Carmen this week as she gets a much-deserved respite. I hope that you’re finding a way to give yourself a break too… watching some new TV (the new season of One Day at a Time premieres tonight!) or reading a new book.

Amid coronavirus, West Hollywood’s LGBTQ community hears echoes of the AIDS crisis

I understand the impulse to draw a connection between those two moments — both driven by government incompetence and indifference — but that parallel is fraught and highly revisionist. AIDS Activist Mark S. King penned a compelling response: Stop Comparing Coronavirus to Early HIV/AIDS. Just Stop.

Saw This, Thought of You: Homeschool Edition

Coronavirus has forced me — and, I suspect, some of you — to become homeschool teachers… and, lemme tell you, it has been tough. I am not sure how the Kentucky legislature can possibly be considering raiding teachers’ pensions when, after just a week of trying to do their job, I want to give teachers whatever they want.

At any rate, I thought I’d take this opportunity to share some resources that I’ve found useful. If you’ve found good resources, please share them in the comments.

  1. Kinda shocked by how broken-hearted I am by so many sporting events being cancelled.

Obviously it was the right call and necessary but I can’t help but mourn for what could have been. March Madness-anyone who says the men’s tournament was more entertaining than the women’s for any of the past 3 years is a wet sock of a human being. The Olympics!? The only people anyone cares about it the women! All the Katie Ledecky memes? WNT maybe finally breaking the WC curse? The last ride of so many basketball superstars? The goddamn gymnasts?! Is there any decent person on earth who doesn’t want to watch some female gymnasts fuck up the laws of physics for a while? Haven’t they earned that?

I think specifically when it comes to women’s sports there are so few chances for any recognition-so many girls devote their lives to something they know they don’t have a future in. What’s more, most sports have actively fought to keep out women and girls (Women’s soccer was banned in Britain for 50 years!). The last place the vast majority of these women will get to play the thing they love at the highest level is college.

To get so much of that precious time snatched away from you and there’s nothing you can do about it? It’s gone and you shouldn’t mourn because it’s “just sports” and it’s not like you could’ve gone pro? Man alive, sports just breaks your heart.

  2. Thank you for the sports content! It’s been weighing on me a lot to lose access to sports in this time. And I can only imagine how much it must affect all the women and girls playing.

  3. education shout out! in my state under-5 schooling is ‘daycare’ and daycare is ‘essential’ sooooo we’re still open for about a tenth of our usual population! my task list tomorrow is literally landscaping, no children involved

also also also (get it) would it be inappropriate to plug my digital pre-k youtube series? right now it’s mostly daily calendar stuff plus a very nice ‘feeling scary feelings is okay’ one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAgcUgJMSxQ&t=1s (if this is gauche i’ll remove it)

    • i’ve been wondering about this, specifically does she bring a demographic in the general he needs? i like/d her as AG and senator, and gosh would she be a vast improvement over the current office holder. i kinda thought she might be a good pick for Sanders, but again, i’m out of my depth.
