Uh-oh look out because it’s time to GET CRAFTY with your fellow A+ members! And Kayla! And me! We’ll be making snow globes together next Thursday, December 15, at 2:00pm Pacific / 5:00pm Eastern in the 13 Days of A+ Discord. If everything goes according to our best laid plans, we’ll be in a dedicated channel, streaming a video call between Kayla and me, with captions, while we make our DIY snow globes and you follow along. CUTE.
You’re gonna need to gather some snow globe making supplies beforehand, so here’s your list!
Glycerin
Glitter
Clear waterproof glue
Clean glass jars
Lil’ guys
Glycerin, glitter, and clear waterproof glue/sealant can be found at any craft store, so those should be easy. Finding your jars and corresponding lil’ guys will hopefully be the only challenging part, but even that challenge should be mild. I recommend repurposing an empty glass jar that you already have. Things like pickles, relish, baby food, marinated artichokes, pimentos, jams, olives, and honey that’s too damn fancy for a plastic bottle will work perfectly. Wash them out, scrub off the labels and, if you’re feeling especially high-end and/or don’t care for the color of your jar’s lid, feel free to paint that sucker before XXX.
Now for the lil’ guys! You’re gonna need some nonmetal figurines/decorative objects that fit inside your glass jar. These can be damn near anything: wee porcelain figurines, plastic figurines from a Christmas village, novelty salt/pepper shaker, a stack of dice, a rock, Legos, a clay snowman that you made ahead of time and covered in a sealant of some kind (like clear nail polish or mod podge!), damn near anything. Just steer clear of wooden objects and metal situations, because they’ll rot or rust, respectively, and that will be such a bummer.
You’ll be gluing your figurine to the inside of the jar lid, filling the jar with water, glycerin and glitter, and then screwing the lil’ guy + lid combo back onto the jar.
There are a couple of things to keep in mind when you’re sourcing your jars and figurines! Obviously you’ll want the jar and figurine to compliment each other size-wise — if you’re using a tall, slender olive jar, your lil’ guy should also be kinda tall; if you’re using a short, wide pimento jar, your lil’ guy’s gonna need to be real little indeed. It’s a good idea to test the height of your figurine inside the empty jar before you get started, because some jars have taller necks than others, and you’ll want to make sure your figurine will be visible once it’s all put together. If your heart is set on a lil’ guy who’s quite short and can’t be seen through the sides of the jar when it’s positioned on the lid, look for something you can repurpose as its base, so the figurine is raised up a bit and can be seen above the neck.
Drop any questions in the comments and we’ll make sure you’re sorted and ready to craft with us by December 15!
