New York Liberty cinching their first title. An incredible rookie class. Charter flights for players. There was a lot to celebrate in the WNBA this year. There was also a lot to mourn: from how the WNBA handled the Clark/Reese rivalry to saying goodbye to players like Layshia Clarendon and witnessing the firing of coaches like Teresa Weatherspoon.

A look back at this groundbreaking 2024 WNBA season — the good and the bad — from some of the journalists, filmmakers and creators who were part of the conversation this year.

I know Candace Parker left the game better, and not just because she’s one hell of hooper. But because with her confidence, her playful cockiness, her swagger, her heart — she made room for all of us in it.

It’s important for new and old fans of the WNBA to understand that while this league has 144 of the best women and nonbinary basketball players in the world, it’s also about more than basketball. It has to be.
