Well I’m still crying about The Owl House finale! Crying and writing and here’s your Monday Pop Culture Fix!
+ Apparently Candace Owens recently said that JoJo Siwa is lying about being a lesbian? For attention? I think actually she used the word “lesbo”? I have no idea how JoJo Siwa even made it onto Candace Owens’ radar to be honest. But whatever the reason, JoJo said NoNo! (Sorry!) She retweeted Owens’ video, saying, “I haven’t watched the video yet…. But if it has anything to do with your caption, respectfully back the f— off.” It’s so weird how Conservatives have shifted from trying to shame gays into staying in the closet to convincing people they’re just saying they’re gay for positive PR. Wild times, friends. Wild times.

+ Hayley Kiyoko has recruited an all-queer cast to record her audiobook, Girls Like Girls. Katie Gavin of MUNA, Malia Pyles from Pretty Little Liars and Brandon Flynn from 13 Reasons Why will star alongside Hayley herself. “They have all made such a positive impact on the queer community through their art and by living their authentic truth each and every day. I couldn’t have asked for a better cast to help me tell this story.” Kiyoko wrote on Instagram.
+ U-Haul lesbians make it onto 90 Day Fiancé.
+ Eureka O’Hara wrote an op-ed in Time magazine about how drag is an expression of queer experience.
+ Dove Cameron opens up about being queer amid anti-LGBTQ legislation.
+ Mourning the loss of The Owl House, TV’s best queer kids show.
+ Really lovely profile of Jodie Comer in the New Yorker this week. She talks about her new one-woman play on Broadway — and, of course, about Villanelle from Killing Eve.
+ The very queer legacy of Team Rocket in Pokemon anime.
+ Our Flag Means Death cast talks queer representation and teases season two.
+ Perry Mason is crafting a revolutionary lesbian love story.
My partner and I went as Jessie and James for Halloween this year – she already had the long red hair, so a blue wig for me and some red fabric paint was really all we needed!
As someone who ran a Team Rocket fansite in elementary school, that article is DEEPLY important to me.
Are you talking about the ones from 13-14 years ago? Or was there something more recent? All I’ve seen lately is her attempting to be anti-racist.
Sorry, wrong spot. I was sure I’d checked I was on the right comment… this system is so frustrating sometimes. Anyway, was replying to the Hayley Kiyoko comment below.
Listen-and I mean no offense to the autostraddle writers here-but why are we continuing to put Kiyoko on a pedestal when she’s said anti black things? And how come Autostraddle never said anything about that?
Maybe the writers don’t know. I didn’t… what things has she said?

A bunch of Rita Ora fans got mad when Hayley called out a music video of hers for being fake queer representation to get attention and they dug through her twitter looking for a way to cancel her but none of the things they posted had any context and as far as I’ve seen. She’s always been someone who works hard to be inclusive and kind. She’s been a great ally to the trans community too. If there’s actual evidence of her saying racist things I’d like to see it.
A quick google search and I found a lot of articles with proof
I can’t wait for season 2 Our Flag Means Death! Already saw season 1 three times, once was on a very long flight when I couldn’t sleep, in full. I need more.
We need more Our Flag in this world, period. Can’t wait.
And Della was my great grandma’s name so I really gave Perry Mason a go, but that show has awful pacing in my opinion. THANK GOODNESS they fixed the lighting in season 2 though, it was awful for the actors who are POC. (Shoutout to Moonlight for making me reassess the lighting classes I took in uni- now I can’t unsee and I appreciate it so so much)
This but Hayley really overstepped when telling a bi person that making art about her bisexuality in the wrong way was dangerous to LGBTQ people because it “invalidates the very pure feelings of an entire community”. It would be great if there was more visibility for different experiences of bisexuality, but LGBTQ people don’t have to be pure to deserve validation and bisexuals don’t have some kind of special responsibility not to be slutty because it’s bad rep. I’ve never liked Hayley since that, but I haven’t seen anything about her being racist as an adult.
(https://twitter.com/HayleyKiyoko/status/995026145484689408 Hayley in her own words, it’s not up to me how you feel about it.)
I’m not sure about any other potential issues with the song, I know one of her collaborators used the n-word but I think said collaborator was black, but I also don’t know what went on behind the scenes of that production and if anyone was pushed into something they didn’t want to do. I don’t think this is particularly something for me to have an opinion on.
