Netflix’s Official “The Prom” Trailer Is All Glitter and Gay

The time for Prom is approaching faster than actual Prom does your senior year of high school and we know this because the full trailer is finally here!

I’ve been feeling so conflicted about this because the Broadway show was SO so great and my feelings were a little hurt when Caitlin Kinnunen and Isabelle McCalla weren’t tapped to reprise their roles in the film version of their musical, and frankly I didn’t know if I could trust Ryan Murphy to not shift the focus to the adult characters instead of the teen lesbians, but I adore Ariana DeBose, and Jo Ellen Pellmen sparkles in this preview, and honestly if the balance in the movie is similar to the balance in the trailer, I think this is going to be a great movie. A glittery, glamorous, gay time full of fun and feelings. Plus with stars like Kerry Washington, Nicole Kidman, and Meryl Streep…it can’t be anything less than dazzling right?

I won’t lie, I went into this trailer with low expectations, but by the time Keegan-Michael Key said, “Okay, I admit, that got to me” I was feeling the exact same way. I got fully swept up in it and finally, finally allowed myself to get genuinely excited about this movie.

  1. I’m so happy about this. I miss The Prom more than I’ve ever missed anything.

It’s such a bonus that once again Emma and Alyssa are both played by wlw actors.

  2. ayaihyaih. .. yay? yikes?

I was not aware of the broadway show so I know nothing beyond the trailer. As an indiana grown gay, I’m gonna have a lot to process. i didn’t go to any of my proms; for senior prom I went to california instead and it was GREAT. this trailer makes me feel very confused, like queasy and also wanting to cry? and also like it’s going to make the culture wars worse instead of better, but maybe that’s what the show is about? like the broadway people realizing they are doing it wrong? like do they realize coming in from outside to a place where they think nothing is happening is . . . not cool? I would watch Keegan-Michael Key read a phone book though, and like it’s not their fault i have a lot of baggage.

    • (Possible Spoiler)

“The adults are ALL pretty out of touch regardless of where they’re from” is kind of how the plot gets going from the start. The conservative small town adults can’t see past their biases and the liberal big city adults can’t see past their assumptions and the kids are the ones dealing with the consequences.

  3. if i do make it thru this, it’ll be because Alice Wu told my story already in The Half of It. Thanks Alice Wu!

  4. I don’t think I can do “The Prom”.

Just finished “Suffragette”. Ready to throw rocks and go on a hunger strike.

  5. This looks potentially great!
(apart from ugh whyy James Corden. everyone in the UK is baffled about why he keeps being put in films when he acts as well as a potato.)

    • it’s the potato factor – round, white – just add male. it makes people in hollywood feel comfortable investing their money.

  6. I think I may have read about this movie being made, but I didn’t realize how many famous people were going to be in it! It’s got a pop-y feel that some contemporary musicals have that isn’t my favourite musical style, but it still seems like it will be fun. I like that it’s an interracial teen couple, too.
As someone who didn’t want to go to prom and didn’t go, it will be a bit of a hard sell for me to believe in what the girls want, but I can get behind them wanting to go to prom as a couple like the students in “straight” relationships.

  7. I loved the musical! I just wish they’d use the actors from the stage production in the movie. Meryl Streep’s poor singing already besmirched Into the Woods, I am dubious that she will be able to handle this character’s songs.
