Monday Roundtable: Eggnog?

It’s Christmas Eve, so for today’s Monday Roundtable, Laneia asked our writers to vote no to eggnog with a Carol the Dog emoji or yes to eggnog with a Huck the Dog emoji. Not only are you getting the gift of those results, but Reneice is also sharing her very own special eggnog recipe with you! And we hope you’ll share your feelings with us in the comments!

Please note: Carol the Dog loves eggnog and resents being used as representative of a nay vote on the following graphic.

Eggnog Eggnog Fa La La La La

by Reneice Charles

Ingredients

3 cups milk
1 cup heavy cream
2 cinnamon sticks
2 whole cloves
1 tsp nutmeg, preferably freshly grated but ground is fine
⅔ cup granulated sugar
5 egg yolks
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup dark rum, brandy, or bourbon. I use half rum, half brandy.

Method

1. Combine the milk, cream, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and nutmeg in a saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Once the mixture reaches a boil remove from the heat and let it sit.

2. While the milk steeps, place the egg yolks and sugar in a large heatproof bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer and whisk together until it’s thick and smooth, about a minute or two.

3. Now, fill a measuring cup with two cups of the hot spiced milk and SLOWLY drizzle it into the egg mixture while whisking. This is called tempering! If you add the milk too quickly it will scramble the eggs, so pour slowly and steadily and whisk the whole time.

4. Once both cups of milk have been whisked into the eggs and everything is smooth combine it with the rest of the milk, add the vanilla and your alcohol of choice in, stir to combine then pour into a pitcher or bottle of some sort and refrigerate overnight. This will allow the flavors to blend and the eggnog to thicken.

5. When you’re ready to serve, pour into glasses garnish with a little fresh nutmeg. You can add booze or not, it’s delicious either way!

  1. We have a wonderful family tradition in which my mother makes an obscene amount of boozy eggnog, we all marvel at what a large quantity it is and how there is no way we could possibly drink it all, we start drinking at 11:00 AM, and it’s gone by dinner. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  2. As a person who hates milk, I can’t imagine mixing it up with even thicker milk and a bunch of eggs and then drinking that?!? There’s no amount of alcohol or sugar you could add to it to make it sound like a viable beverage option to me.

  3. 10000% yes, i loved eggnog as a non-vegan and now i love vegan eggnog!

what’s the best name for vegan eggnog though? eggless eggnog? veggnog? no-eggnog?

  4. Eggnog is one of those things…if you tell me you don’t like it, I just assume it’s because you’ve never had someone make it for you, correctly.

Also true for brussels sprouts and okra.

  5. No. Not only am I lactose intolerant but the thought of putting eggs in a drink kinda makes me wanna gag. Eggs belong on a plate with bacon not in a glass, cup or mug. Sorry!

  6. If thick eggnog kinda makes you gag, silk nog is my fave substitute (I think it might be vegan too), it has all the charm, esp added to your coffee!

  7. Yes to the nog, but not unadulterated. Eggnog is good in coffee or with brandy, but alone it is so sweet and thick, it’s reminiscent of drinking melted icecream.

  8. I don’t think I’ve ever had eggnog, but it also never sounded that good to me. Something about raw eggs don’t sound appetizing. Maybe whiskey up it might.

  9. I enjoyed making eggnog the last few years but this year I saw coquito on Charmed, made a batch, and am never going back.

  10. I love egg nog, and only the nog that I grew up with- from a carton, no cinnamon or nutmeg added, and absolutely no booze.

  11. A comic once summed up how I feel about eggnog: for when I want pancakes, but I also want booze!

    Which is to say, rarely.

  12. I’m an eggnog fan, more generally a “Milk and alcohol” fan. I haven’t tried Vegan but I’m sure it’s awesome.

Mind you, lately I’ve been making Jamaican Sorrel Punch for Christmas and it is pretty awesome. Not as rich as eggnog (so I can drink more, yay !)
