Welcome to your weekly pop culture fix, a light dive into deep work.

Our Favorite Canadians

+ Billboard magazine sent a photographer to follow Tegan & Sara around last weekend as they attended and performed at NYC Pride and of course this journey eventually led them to the greatest place on earth: our party! That’s right; my favorite band and quite possibly yours too made a surprise appearance at the Everyone Is Gay / Autostraddle Pride Party at Housing Works Bookstore and everything was beautiful and nothing hurt.

LOOK AT KRISTIN!!!!!

A wonderful time was had by all:

+ While we’re on the topic of adorable queer Canadians who play music and possess admirable political beliefs, Ellen Page recorded this heart-breaking cover of Britney Spears’ “Lucky” for you:

  1. I didn’t think it was possible to have a bigger crush on Ellen Page, but then I watched that video and swooned so hard I might’ve pulled a muscle.

  2. fantastic article on the space racist trope! i was annoyed with how they handled the allura/galra storyline on voltron, but hadn’t thought to question why coran didn’t have the same reaction as allura. dang, one more shoddy writing trope to piss me off!

  3. Tangentially related to lesbian pop culture interests might be the Rockford Peaches themed night at the Brooklyn Cyclones game this weekend.

(Sadly, I live on the wrong coast, so I’ll just be sulking like Kit after she gets traded to Racine while my friends back east get to go.)

      • You’re welcome! And also thank you for making me feel better about sharing (I was slightly afraid of being accused of “promoting” an event, which for the record, I have zero affiliation with, but I figured if I lived in NYC, I’d want to know about this one! Free Rockford hats! Celebrity appearances by out lady Megan Cavanagh/Marla Hooch! So awesome!).

    • I am not on the East Coast and I also wanted to hear about this! That’s awesome.

  4. Bonus fun fact: the dancer/choreographer collaborating with Ellen Page in the Lucky video, Emma Portner, is also a supertalented Canadian who has identified herself as “publicly un-closeted.”

  5. Adding Ellen Page covering Britney Spears to my list of Things I Didn’t Know I Needed.
