UPDATE: Kirk Cameron has responded to the response to his biogtry. The statement he gave ABC News:
“I spoke as honestly as I could, but some people believe my responses were not loving toward those in the gay community. That is not true. I can assuredly say that it’s my life’s mission to love all people.
I should be able to express moral views on social issues, especially those that have been the underpinning of Western civilization for 2,000 years — without being slandered, accused of hate speech, and told from those who preach ‘tolerance’ that I need to either bend my beliefs to their moral standards or be silent when I’m in the public square. I believe we need to learn how to debate these things with greater love and respect,” and added, “I’ve been encouraged by the support of many friends (including gay friends, incidentally).”
There you go, Kirk Cameron has been attacked by you! I hope you’re all ashamed of yourselves. Anyhow, back to our regularly scheduled programming…
I wrote on Sunday about my complete and total inability to give a fuck about Kirk Cameron saying stupid shit about gay people AGAIN, primarily because Kirk Cameron has been saying stupid shit about gay people — and also about evolution, sidenote — for quite some time now. I’ve already written him off as a religious zealot who won’t ever explain or apologize (“Never explain, never apologize” – Brian Kinney), and I’m sure many of you have, too.
However, The Advocate has gathered some of the celebrity reactions to Kirk Cameron‘s statements, and after reading the precious response of Jordan Knight (Jordan was in my favorite 1991 boy-band, New Kids on the Block, with his brother, Jonathan Knight, who is gay and came out last year), I knew I had at least two fucks left to give about whether or not you’ve laughed enough today. I’m sure people are gonna yell at him, but whatever, he’s #justsayin:

Yesterday on The Talk, Sara Gilbert — who was young and famous around the same time that Kirk Carmeron was young and famous (and is now older and gay around the same time that Kirk is older and gay JUST KIDDING he’s totally straight!) — said: “You really have to think about who you are hurting … the kids out there who aren’t OK with who they are. In lesbian, gay, and transgender youth, the suicide attempt rate is 30 to 40 percent, and those kids hearing that message. … He just needs to think about that. And when he’s saying we’re taking apart foundations in society, I would argue that there is no one who fights for marriage more than gay people.”
While to be honest I don’t think there are very many high school kids hanging on Kirk Cameron’s every word, I’m glad she got that number out there, for real. I don’t know, maybe I was wrong about not giving a fuck. Maybe the point wasn’t his reaction, but everybody else’s. If you’re gonna get mad at somebody for being a totally homophobic and/or misogynistic asshole, this would be the week to do it.

I still don’t give a f*ck. Honestly there are so many other more important battles for the gay community than a religious extremist spewing his views. Given his history, his response wasn’t surprising, and to be fair the man was simply answering a question honestly and truthfully based on what he believes. While I in no way agree with him, I don’t think he should be attacked for his opinions either, however wrong or ill advised as they may be, in our (correct) views.
I love how this site deconstructs issues with humor and snark. I sometimes get uncomfortable when people are quick to be all. “Oh you hate gays, then you’re secretly gay nhay!” cause it seems counter productive but 8 out of 10 republican senators trolling for dick on the internet/in airport bathrooms/amongst their staff agree that homophobic rhetoric is what’s hot on the streets.

I honestly think what these people consider “support from gay friends” is that their gay friends (if they actually exist*) don’t completely abandon them when they say this shit. I can’t imagine anyone who would be comfortable enough with their sexual orientation to be out to someone like Kirk Cameron who also would be self-hating enough to stand by comments like that. But maybe that’s just me.
*I’m with Dan Savage in that we need to start asking homophobes to present proof of these “gay friends.”

If anyone’s interested in some of Cameron’s other dumb fuckery, today The Wild Hunt has an article up about that time Kirk and Ray “Banana” Comfort infiltrated a Druid ritual (an Ár nDraíocht Féin one, specifically) and they claimed they “barely escaped un-sacrificed.” It’s kind of hilarious and infuriating at the same time.

Oh, Kirk. F*UCK you! I honestly mean that in the most loving and truthful way possible. It doesn’t sound ridiculous at all, does it?

Given his personal history I didn’t really find his comments all that shocking. In fact, compared to some of the other more outragous things said about gays, women, etc. over the last few years his comments seem don’t right milktoast! This is really one of the most underappriciated benifits of free speech….the antiseptic effect of having someone air the most obtuse of views before in public.
Where I think some his critics go too far, is when they say he’s guilty of being an accomplice to actual violence. That gives credibility to a lame temporary insanity defense and makes it together to convict those responsible for actually hate crimes. Not to mention it’s make you look like the bully. It’s totally counter productive.
On a less serious note, I loved what someone said about Kirk’s on the street video from a few years back where he pesters people into saying what sins there guilty of. It’s was something to the effect of “I don’t where he getting off telling everybody off guilty they are, when he was the one constantly making those God-awfull fat jokes to his sister!” You might need to someone of Tracy Gold’s background to get that reference.
I should have known I was gay when I was younger and could NOT figure out all the hullabaloo about Kirk Cameron, but got seriously jealous when the actress, Chelsea Noble, who played his girlfriend on the show became his wife in real life. The part that bothers me most about this whole thing isn’t his comments, but the fact that this gorgeous creature is married to that. Sigh.
